Hobbit Trails

Random thoughts from a collection of people, defying any organizational principle. It's like a rabbit trail, only we tend more often to chase hobbits.

Proverb

An honest answer is like...a kiss on the lips.

Do you ask yourself, "HOW is it like a kiss on the lips?" What did Solomon have in mind?

For example, with seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines, a kiss on the lips for him was valued probably quite a bit different than, say, for still-single me. Also, honest answers were no doubt much harder to come by for him in a Spin City--everybody wants something from you--than for me. People are usually brutally honest to people poorer than themselves, meaning people from whom they expect nothing. It's one of the advantages of poverty, strangely...a solid grounding in reality.

But that's off the point. Is an honest answer like a kiss because it's an unabashed, potentially public display of love? Because it's less common in long-term relationships than it should be? Because it's mutually pleasant and plants seeds for good things in a relationship? Possibilities abound.

Does this proverb draw extra punch, extra not-what-you-expected zing, from other honest answers that are more like a slap in the face?
